Notes

They are also the most wide-ranging salamander species in North America, living throughout most of the United States, southern Canada, and eastern Mexico. They live in deep burrows, up to two feet below the surface, near ponds, lakes, or slow-moving streams and are one of few salamanders able to survive in the arid climate of the North America interior. this is one of the last times I saw these salamanders in this area..... The area went under ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION which made these salamanders disappear from this area in chicago. They claim it was to restore habitat for the nesting site for around 700 state-endangered black-crowned night herons, one of the largest nesting colonies for this bird in Illinois, and by removing woody invasive species with herbicide applications and prescribed burning, grubbing, seeding, and planting using appropriate seed mixes specific to each habitat type, and clearing and applying soil amendments; restoration of shoreline by creating a gentle transition from aquatic habitat to upland habitat; but I see more harm then good in this area.
