Notes
This same snake has been observed in this location (under a large sheet of plywood) four other times since March of this year (2009). A Bushy-tailed Wood Rat has also taken up residence in the same location since early May, though the two are never seen together. This rattlesnake is relatively docile and reluctant to rattle unless prodded.
A Two-striped Garter Snake (Thamnophis hammondii) has been spotted twice within 400 feet of this rattlesnake since April 2009. Snake trails, presumably from other snakes based on size, have been spotted in the immediate vicinity (within 400 feet). A San Diego Gopher Snake was also spotted within 200 feet of this rattlesnake in March 2009.
I live nearby and Southern Pacifics are a routine sight. Juvenile Southern Pacifics are often found in local yards in late Summer and Fall.
