Gravid female in funnel trap, after being handled started to open its mouth and act like a cobra in a threat display. Apparently this behavior is atypical for the genus but was also reported by: Todd, B.D. 2008. Virginia valeriae (Smooth Earth Snake). Threat display. Herpetological Review 39(4):475.
