Notes
BLM biologist, Matt Obradovich, and I found an adult specimen, and moments later a juvenile, on the brink of the eastern escarpment of Steens Mountain. Although pygmy short-horned lizards usually occur on sandy-pebbly soils, this population inhabits an area mostly composed of basalt. The adult was basking on a small boulder when we first encountered it. Upon being frightened, it hopped to an adjoining rock with the agility of a fence lizard. The juvenile was in a nearby section of jumbled small stones.
