Notes
Sub-adult female sleeping in Brazilian a Pepper.
A total of 12 chameleons were observed on 1 Jan, 2 Jan, and 5 Jan, all in a 3 square block area of one residential neighborhood in Lee County, FL. Neighborhood is bounded on 3 sides by 2 canals, and residential homes are interspersed by 8+ empty lots. 10 chameleons were observed on empty lots, mostly on Brazilian Pepper, however 2 chameleons were observed on trees in front lawns of residential homes. There also appears to be sizable inaccessible habitat- views from Google Earth shows 24 houses that share a long continuous back fence with hedges and large trees in backyards. Extirpation of this population would likely require the cooperation of these homeowners in removal efforts. The canals may not be effect barriers to dispersal as 1 observation was on an empty lot across one of the canals from the other 11 observations. Additional/nearby empty lots should periodically be monitored for expansion of this population of exotic species.
