Hit by car. It was spotted sitting upside down on the shoulder of a busy road. A good part of the shell was torn off, but it was very much alive. I just hope removing it from the road meant this guy might survive somehow.

Looks nasty right now, but I've seen boxies survive with a split down the shell.
Wow - that looks really bad - but I think it can make it, unfortunately, it won't have much protection anymore against predators (if it did survive)
