I would characterize this animal as a young adult (see rattle). Several knowledgable individuals have looked at the photographs of this snake. Some (including myself) feel that it is C. m. stephensi while others favor C. o. oreganus. I certainly agree that it is not a clear-cut decision and have thus left the species unspecified.

I am very new to Crotalus field herping... I never heard of a stephensi before... absolutely gorgeous rattler.
You take some very remarkable shots... excellent.
I've never seen an oreganus like that - looks like a stephensi to me
