Was walking from the shelter of the stone wall around 1 p.m. on a hot August day - I've never seen that behavior before.
Handled briefly to get a good gauge of it's size - my palms are 3 inches wide and 6 inches to my fingertip, so it was a fairly large salamander (well over 7 inches).
